The Surfient Story
Twelve years of SEO engineering, rebuilt from the ground up for the answer-engine era.
Onviqa Inc. was founded in 2014 as a Shopify-native engineering studio. Over the next decade we shipped work for more than 500 enterprise merchants across fashion, jewelry, electronics, food, home, and health. Every theme, every integration, every schema graph, every performance audit — one long argument with the ten-blue-links discovery model.
Then in late 2023 ChatGPT changed the question merchants were asking. By 2024 the gap between what large language models needed from a catalog and what Shopify stores actually published was the most interesting problem we'd seen in a decade. Surfient is our answer.
The thesis
AI is 1–2% of product discovery today. In five years it will be the majority.
Every merchant we've spent the last two years with is asking the same three questions: does ChatGPT cite my catalog, does Perplexity pick me over a competitor, and will Google AI Overviews surface my product when a shopper asks "what's the best wool coat for $250?" The honest answer today is usually "no, because your catalog isn't published the way these systems need it." The honest answer five years out is that this is what discovery looks like for the majority of considered purchases.
500+ enterprise Shopify merchants
Twelve years of shipping for brands across fashion, jewelry, electronics, food, home, and health. The dataset underneath every Surfient recommendation.
100+ specialists in one subscription
LLM researchers, citation analysts, schema engineers, prompt engineers, feed operators, brand-voice editors, eval + QA — the team it would take to do this manually, condensed into one platform.
1–2% → 50–60% in five years
AI-driven discovery is a sliver of the surface today and will be the majority by 2030. Surfient is the bet that the stores indexed now compound ahead of everyone who waits.
The hockey stick we're betting on
Projections from BrightEdge, Gartner, and Similarweb — synthesised against our own 500+ Shopify merchant citation panel — put AI-driven product discovery somewhere between 50% and 60% of the total surface by 2030. Stores that start indexing now compound ahead of the ones that wait.

How we got here
From theme customisations to AI indexing
Twelve years, four hundred merchants, and one inflection point we didn't see coming. Here's the honest walk — the good decisions, the expensive lessons, and the thing we quietly got right the whole time.
2014
OriginOnviqa Inc. is founded
Two engineers and a handful of Shopify theme projects. From day one the thesis was the same: build for merchants who care about every click, not for the reports that read like ten-slide decks.
2016
First 100 Shopify stores shipped
Custom themes, checkout experiments, app integrations. We started to notice the same discovery patterns across thousands of SKUs — and where the off-the-shelf SEO tools ran out of answers.
2019
SEO engineering becomes a practice, not a service
We moved past 'optimise the meta tags' into schema graphs, feed quality, site architecture, and query-intent research. Onviqa's retention numbers started compounding against the agencies we were competing with.
2022
Scale500+ enterprise clients
Over the decade we shipped engineering work for more than 500 enterprise Shopify merchants across North America, EU, and APAC. The data set we'd built quietly turned into the most valuable piece of the company.
2023
InflectionChatGPT changes the question
For the first time in ten years the thing we optimised for — the SERP — wasn't the discovery surface anymore. Merchants started asking us 'why aren't we cited in ChatGPT?' and we didn't have a clean answer. That was the inflection.
2024
AI-indexing research begins
We started systematically auditing how ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews picked which catalogs to cite. The gap between what LLMs needed (structured, machine-readable, source-attributable data) and what Shopify stores published (hero banners, marketing copy) was enormous.
2025
BetaClosed beta with Shopify Plus merchants
First Surfient audit engine ships. A handful of brands see citations climb week over week. One case study — Kloira — goes from 2 citations a month to 37, without changing a single product or price.
2026
TodayPublic launch
What you're reading now. Full platform open to every Shopify merchant — audits, fixes, AI-ready files, citation monitoring. Free tier for every store, Premium for teams that want the whole stack done for them.
The arithmetic
100+ AI specialists, packaged for under $39 a month.
To do what Surfient does manually you'd hire roughly a hundred specialists: LLM researchers to monitor how every engine ranks your catalog, citation analysts to track share-of-voice, schema engineers to ship the structured data, prompt engineers to tune the query surfaces you want to win, feed operators to keep your products machine-readable, brand-voice editors to rewrite copy for quoting, eval-and-QA folks to catch regressions, and reporting teams to translate all of it back to stakeholders.
Surfient compresses that entire stack into one platform that installs in your Shopify admin. Free tier keeps every merchant current. Premium at $39/mo is the full team.
- 80+ checkpoint AI-indexing audit every week
- Automated schema, feeds, and AI-ready files (llms.txt, products.ndjson, ai-sitemap.xml)
- Citation monitoring across 9 engines — with diffs, not just totals
- Brand-voice-aware copy rewrites for AI quoting

Where we're still early
This field is three years old. We don't pretend otherwise.
Generative Engine Optimization is younger than most Shopify stores. The vocabulary is still moving — citations, mentions, answer inclusions — and the ranking signals are less stable than classic SERP signals were at a comparable age. Every benchmark on this site is accompanied by its methodology, every forecast by its assumptions, every recommendation by its confidence level. If we're wrong about something, we'd rather publish the correction than polish the claim.
Twelve years into this we've learned that the teams who win the next discovery layer are the ones who ship into uncertainty — not the ones who wait for the handbook.
Start indexing before the majority does.
Free tier installs in under three minutes and audits your whole catalog against the 80+ checkpoint AI-indexing rubric. Keep the results. Upgrade if the diffs start compounding.
