What launched on 24 March 2026 — a plain-English timeline
Three distinct things shipped on the same day: ACP as a public spec, ChatGPT Shopping as the consumer surface, and Shopify auto-enrollment as the merchant side.
The Agentic Storefronts launch combined three things that had been in beta through the second half of 2025 and most of the press coverage blurred them together. Understanding them as three separate components clarifies what auto-enrollment actually gave you and what it did not.
- Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP)
- An open protocol jointly authored by OpenAI, Shopify, and Stripe for how AI agents discover, present, and transact with ecommerce inventory. The spec is public and other marketplaces (Perplexity, Anthropic) are expected to adopt it in 2026.
- ChatGPT Shopping
- The consumer-facing product inside ChatGPT. On transactional prompts, users see a product carousel with one-tap 'Buy in chat' checkout via ACP. Available to all ChatGPT users (Free, Plus, Pro).
- Shopify Agentic Storefronts auto-enrollment
- The merchant side — Shopify auto-enrolled every eligible store (Basic, Shopify, Advanced, Plus) into the ACP feed on 24 March 2026. Merchants can opt out in Shopify Admin → Settings → Agentic Commerce.

Shopify stores estimated to be auto-enrolled in ACP as of April 2026
Shopify engineering blog, April 4 2026. Excludes trial-tier, suspended, and opted-out stores.
What auto-enrollment actually covers — and what it does not
Catalog syndication and ACP checkout are automatic. Search visibility, policy review, and feed quality are still on you.
Auto-enrollment is narrower than most of the press coverage suggested. Here is what Shopify actually ships for you when your store is enrolled versus what you are still responsible for on your own.
What Shopify handles automatically
- Catalog syndication — your product titles, descriptions, images, prices, variants, and inventory are pushed to the ACP feed continuously.
- One-tap ACP checkout — when a ChatGPT user taps 'Buy in chat', Shopify handles payment, tax, shipping label, and order creation without the user leaving ChatGPT.
- Order flow — orders appear in your Shopify Admin the same as a direct-channel order, tagged as 'sales_channel: chatgpt'.
- Payment reconciliation — processed through your existing Shopify Payments setup; settles to your existing payout schedule.
What you still need to do yourself
- Feed quality — if your product titles are branded ('Kairos Chronograph'), missing GTINs, or have policy-violating words, your products will be auto-enrolled but deprioritized or silently filtered out. No warning surface exists in Shopify Admin today.
- ChatGPT Search visibility — auto-enrollment covers only the ChatGPT Shopping carousel. Being cited in regular ChatGPT Search answers requires separate content and schema work.
- Cross-platform visibility — Perplexity, Gemini, Claude all have their own retrieval systems. ACP is OpenAI-specific today even though the protocol itself is open.
- Policy review — ACP has specific policies around returns, shipping, and disclosure that are slightly stricter than standard Shopify. A store with a 'final sale' policy on all items, for example, will be restricted from ChatGPT Shopping even if enrolled.
- Support and fulfillment SLA — orders that come through ACP are held to the same 2-day shipping and 14-day response SLAs as Shopify's own Shop Promise program. Missing these repeatedly triggers a de-list.
How the ACP checkout flow works for your buyer
A five-step journey from query to confirmed order, entirely inside ChatGPT. Understanding each step tells you where you can influence the outcome.
The user journey from query to fulfilled order is shorter than any channel your store has seen before. Here is the exact sequence, step by step, so you can map each step to the levers you control.
- 1Query. User prompts ChatGPT with a buyer-intent phrase ('a moissanite watch under $500 for my husband'). ChatGPT parses intent and fetches candidate products via ACP.
- 2Carousel. ChatGPT renders a product carousel with 3-6 products. Your product's visibility here depends on feed quality, title de-branding, and retrieval ranking (covered in the rank-shopify-in-chatgpt guide).
- 3Detail. User taps a product. ChatGPT renders a detail card with your images, description excerpt, price, shipping info, and reviews. The description excerpt comes from your PDP, so description quality matters here.
- 4Checkout. User taps 'Buy in chat'. ChatGPT presents shipping address, payment method, and confirm. If the user has saved payment on file with OpenAI, this is one tap.
- 5Confirmation. Order posts to Shopify via ACP webhook. User sees confirmation in ChatGPT; you see the order in your admin within 15 seconds. Fulfillment runs through your normal Shopify Shipping flow.
The seven-action merchant checklist for post-launch ACP
Seven concrete things every Shopify merchant should verify now that they are enrolled. Most take under 30 minutes each.
- 1. Verify enrollment status
- Shopify Admin → Settings → Agentic Commerce. Confirm 'Enrolled' status. If the page does not exist, your plan tier does not qualify (trial, suspended, or international restricted markets).
- 2. Audit feed disapprovals
- There is no built-in disapproval surface today. Manually: pick 20 products, query ChatGPT with their exact titles, note which ones return no result. If a title consistently returns nothing, the product is silently suppressed.
- 3. De-brand product titles
- ChatGPT Shopping ranks titles against user queries. 'Kairos Chronograph' loses to 'Men's 42mm moissanite chronograph'. Update your 20 hero products first.
- 4. Add GTINs where missing
- ACP deprioritizes products without a GTIN on transactional queries. If you do not carry GTINs (common for small-batch artisan products), use MPN as a fallback; the ranker accepts it with slightly lower confidence.
- 5. Review your refund/returns policy
- ACP requires at least 14-day returns on non-final-sale items and clear disclosure of final-sale items at the product level. A blanket 'all sales final' policy will restrict you from ChatGPT Shopping.
- 6. Set up ACP order-flow webhooks
- Shopify fires dedicated webhooks for agentic-channel orders (topic: orders/create with sales_channel = 'chatgpt'). Point them at your fulfillment automation so these orders do not get lost in volume.
- 7. Add a weekly ACP-visibility check
- Include 10 transactional prompts in your weekly AI-visibility panel specifically to track ChatGPT Shopping carousel inclusion. Carousel visibility is the canary for feed health — if it drops, something broke.
What is expected to land by Q3 2026 and what to prepare for
Second-wave agent integrations, multi-turn dialogs, and the arrival of the broader ACP ecosystem. Three things to prep your catalog for.
Shopify, OpenAI, and Stripe have telegraphed the Q2-Q3 2026 roadmap in their respective engineering blogs and at partner events. None of the items below are production-live as of April 2026, but the signal is strong enough that it is worth preparing the catalog now rather than rebuilding in six months.
- 1Multi-turn dialog commerce. Today's ACP flow assumes one query → one checkout. The H2 2026 roadmap includes multi-turn flows where the user can ask follow-up questions ('does it come in smaller?', 'what about a gift-wrap option?') before committing. Rich variant metadata and gift-option exposure become more valuable.
- 2Perplexity and Anthropic ACP adoption. Both have publicly indicated plans to ship ACP-compatible checkout surfaces in H2 2026. When they do, your auto-enrolled Shopify ACP feed should surface in those channels with zero additional work — provided your feed quality is adequate.
- 3Agentic returns. Initial returns are handled through Shopify's normal returns flow. H2 2026 roadmap includes agent-initiated returns where the user can say 'return my last order' inside ChatGPT and the flow executes without the user leaving chat. Requires a clean returns policy stored structurally.
“Enrollment happened overnight. Visibility did not. The merchants who treated 24 March as 'work starts now' are the ones who will dominate ACP for the next 18 months.”
